Getting Married in Mauritius – the Perfect Location for your Dream Wedding!
If you have chosen Mauritius as your wedding location, you know exactly why. Besides marvellous beaches, the island paradise in the Indian Ocean also offers unique settings, so that your wedding day will become the most wonderful day of your life. Stunning locations and the chance to realise and experience different ceremonies that are shaped by your own ideas will delight couples and guests alike.
Far away from everyday stress at home, Mauritius is the perfect spot for weddings. While elsewhere the registrar’s office is the typical place to tie the knot, opportunities are manifold in Mauritius. A small ceremony on a private beach in front of your own villa or perhaps a bombastic party on a small island? Maybe you prefer to tie the knot under water or on a catamaran or a yacht. Your wishes are our mission. Please contact us for a quote.
Civil vs. symbolic wedding
After many years of experience with organising weddings we have noticed that the difference of a civil to a symbolic wedding is seldom clear. We have outlined the characteristics of both types of ceremonies for you to be able to make a better choice of what you are looking for.
The civil wedding is the foundation of love and the prerequisite for the legally valid marriage back in your home countries. The civil marriage of foreign couples in Mauritius is permitted and thus can be legalised in all member states of "The Hague Convention" (including all of Europe and has a total of 82 members). The marriage certificate is stamped in Mauritius with the official stamp called Apostille. This document must be presented to the Civil Status office back in your home countries in order to make the wedding legal. From most citizens we only need a copy of the first three double pages of the passports and a copy of both (international) birth certificates latest 6 weeks prior to the wedding date. These copies, which are sent to us by email, do not have to be certified or notarised, nor do we need a "certificate of no impediment to marriage".
The symbolic wedding is not valid under civil law and therefore not bound by content or legal conventions. This ceremony is ideal for couples who have already been married in their home country and now want to celebrate the wedding with their close family and/or friends or in intimacy. The symbolic ceremony will be held by a wedding officiant who will integrate your personal story in the speech. You can also choose to say personal vows to one another and or to perform a sand ceremony at the end of the ceremony. We are happy to guide you through the rituals.
Renewal of wedding vows
The renewal of wedding vows, just like the symbolic wedding, is not valid under civil law. For many couples it is a romantic sign to renew their marriage vows after many years of going through thick and thin. The renewal of the promise made at the time is not a repetition of it, but rather a conscious look back in pride and gratitude for all the years that were lived together. The occasion can be very different - be it a round anniversary or a personal celebration after passing the ups and downs of the relationship. In the following table you will find the names of the wedding days and when the respective marriage years are celebrated.
