Tips for Packing for Your Legal Destination Wedding in Mauritius

One of the most amazing journeys you will ever embark on is organising a destination wedding. With romance, travel, and lifelong memories, it’s a true celebration of love. Imagine saying your vows on a spotless Mauritius beach as the sun sets and waves gently lap at your feet.

However, there is a small bit of practical magic to attend to before you say “I do” in paradise: preparing your paperwork and packing wisely. We have assisted many couples on this journey as a professional wedding planner in Mauritius, and we are aware of how important it is to have everything planned.

Key Takeaways

  • Crucial Legal Documents: The “Application to Marry,” passports, and recently issued birth certificates serve as the cornerstones of your international marriage.
  • Other Documents as Needed: Get pertinent legal documents, such as divorce decrees, deed polls, or death certificates, in the event of prior marriages, name changes, or the death of a spouse.
  • Special Attention for French Couples: French nationals must include the CCAM (Certificat de Capacité à Mariage)
  • Easy Legal Process: We will schedule your civil appointment two working days prior to the ceremony, print and submit your documents in Port Louis after they are emailed.
  • Smart Packing: Bring light, breathable clothing appropriate for the tropical climate of the island, along with your wedding attire, documents, and rings.
  • Get There Early: In order to complete the formalities and unwind before your wedding, schedule your arrival in Mauritius at least three to four days in advance.
  • Expert Planning Advice: Don’t overpack; leave room for mementos and souvenirs and save digital copies of all documents.
  • Unwind and Have Fun: Your destination wedding in Mauritius can be incredibly romantic, stress-free, and unforgettable with careful planning and a dash of island magic.

Your legal documents are the most important thing to bring

Before you start dreaming about dresses, décor, or a starlit dinner, make sure your legal documents are at the top of your list. They’re the key to making your wedding in Mauritius official — without them, the ceremony simply can’t take place.

For a civil wedding in Mauritius, you’ll need to bring the following original documents:

• Your passports

• Birth certificates in English or French (or with a certified translation) that were issued within three months of the wedding date. For example: Should your wedding day be the 15th of May 2027, your birth certificate should be issued after the 15th of February 2027 so that the birth certificate is not older than 3 months on your wedding day).

• The filled-out “Application to Marry” form

If applicable:

• If you were previously married, your divorce decree and previous marriage certificate

• If the bride was divorced within the last ten months, a medical certificate attesting to the bride’s non-pregnancy

• Death certificate and former marriage certificate if widowed

• Any paperwork pertaining to a name change (dead poll)

Packing Essentials for Your Destination Wedding

Packing essentials for your wedding in Mauritius

With all your paperwork sorted, it’s time to move on to the fun part — packing for your big day! Here’s a handy checklist to help you prepare for a stress-free, stylish, and sun-kissed wedding celebration.

For the Bride:

Since your ceremony will likely take place on the beach, we recommend choosing elegant flat shoes rather than high heels, so you can stay comfortable throughout the day. If you can’t imagine your wedding without heels, bring along a pair of pretty flats to slip into later and fully enjoy your evening.

If you’ve booked our professional hair and make-up artist, there’s no need to pack extra cosmetics — everything you’ll need will be provided. That said, if you have very sensitive skin and prefer to use your own products, you’re welcome to bring them along. Rest assured, though, our make-up artist only works with high-quality, waterproof brands.

Wedding days in Mauritius tend to be shorter than those in Europe, with most ceremonies taking place between 4 and 5 PM, just before sunset. Since it gets dark between 6 and 7pm, most brides prefer to stay in the same dress for the entire celebration, so there’s usually no need to bring a second outfit.

For the Groom:

  • Lightweight suit: Opt for cotton or linen blends — they’re perfect for Mauritius’ warm climate.
  • Footwear: For that relaxed island vibe, beach shoes or even going barefoot both work beautifully.
  • Vest coat (December–April weddings): You’re welcome to wear a vest coat if you like, but keep in mind that it can be very warm in Mauritius. If you’re comfortable with the heat, go for it! Just choose a stylish shirt underneath so that if you decide to remove your vest later, you’ll still look sharp in your photos. Click here to read more about the weather in Mauritius.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget the little details like cufflinks, a watch, or a belt — they complete your look.

For the Bride and Groom:

  • Emergency kit: Pack a few essentials like safety pins, a small sewing kit, stain remover wipes, pain relievers, tissues, and seasickness medication (especially if you’re planning a catamaran trip, as local pharmacies may not always have it in stock).
  • Documents: Keep copies of all important paperwork and confirmations, both printed and saved electronically.
  • Resort wear: Bring some light resort clothing and swimwear — your honeymoon begins the moment you say “I do”!

Professional Wedding Planner Tips

Tips for your wedding in Mauritius by a professional wedding planner

Over the years, we’ve helped many couples plan their dream weddings in Mauritius. Here are a few simple but effective tips that can make a big difference:

  • Keep digital copies of your documents: Store them in cloud storage or on your phone for easy access.
  • Skip packing insect repellent and sunscreen: Both are readily available in supermarkets across Mauritius at very reasonable prices.
  • Choose comfort and style: Lightweight fabrics like linen, silk, and chiffon are perfect for island weddings.
  • Pack light: Leave room for souvenirs, photos, and special finds from the island. For affordable souvenirs, we usually recommend shopping on your last day at Super U Grand Baie or Intermart Grand Baie

Above all, keep in mind that this is your love story in paradise, so breathe, smile, and enjoy every second.
